Eczema Case Study

Annie's Eczema Story...

Eczema falls in to a group of problems called atopic diseases. These usually run in families, and include eczema, asthma, hayfever, allergic rhinitis, and food allergies. Flare-ups may be caused by stress, or contact with irritants such as detergents, animals or wool.

Conventional treatment is in the form of emollients, water or paraffin based creams and antihistamines. These may help to relieve some of the itching, or bring the skin rash 'under control' but rarely eradicates it completely. Parents of children with eczema are often told that they may 'grow out of it'. This can happen, but not always.

I have a special interest in this skin complaint, as I suffered from eczema myself in my teens and twenties, and again in my early thirties. I know from personal experience how irritating and stressful it can be, but with homeopathic treatment, I have been free of eczema for many years now.

My approach

At the beginning of homeopathic treatment for eczema, I recommend an increase in drinking water to 1.5 litres a day, together with an Omega 3 EFA food supplement. I also discuss skin care products and make various recommendations, depending on what is already being used.

I often begin with 'detox' remedies and use herbal formulas to support the skin and relieve itching. Later on, further deeper acting homeopathic remedies will be used. It is likely that several different remedies will be used throughout the course of treatment.

Eczema can clear up fairly quickly, but more often can take up to a year, or sometimes longer. When this is the case, it does involve patience, persistence and commitment on the part of everybody concerned. Patients who attend appointments regularly attain the best results.
